The long-awaited tasting where outstanding Swedish wines meet their Europe counterparts is over. The result was very positive for the Swedish wine industry: a Swedish wine topped the list when the 18 international wine tasters made their decision.

The Swedish Wine Tasting 2024 ended on Wednesday afternoon at Koenigsegg in Ängelholm. Among the 18 tasters were some of the world's most influential sommeliers, wine writers and Masters of Wine. Their task was to blind taste Sweden's best wines against corresponding wines from all over Europe. It all took place under strict rules developed by Kristianstad University, Center for Food Health and Retail, and Adam/Albin and A.S.I Education Committee Director Sören Polonius.

The Swedish winning wine is Immelen, 2021 vintage, from Kullabergs Vingård on the Kulla Peninsula in Skåne. Then followed a French classic, Louis Jadot Pouilly-Fuissé 2022; and in third place an English surprise: the sparkling wine Classic Cuvée Extra Brut from Langham Culver from England.

A total of 24 wines were tasted, of which 12 were Swedish and 12 were European. The former are those that received the highest rating in an extensive blind tasting of Swedish wines in June. The European wines are selected to match the Swedish ones in style and price.

However, The Swedish Wine Tasting 2024 will not end with this tasting, explains the project group behind the event – instead, it is a launch for Swedish wine into the future, with a comprehensive report on Swedish wine and quality to be published in September.

- The Swedish Wine Tasting has been a unique opportunity for Swedish wine producers to be compared with established winemakers from Europe. But it is also a unique opportunity to showcase Swedish wine production to an international audience. Swedish wine production has a great potential to become an important and established branch of agriculture and it contributes both to more jobs and to raising Swedish gastronomy, says Rural Affairs Minister Peter Kullgren.

- This blind tasting really shows the quality that exists in the Swedish wine industry today. I am convinced that the Nordic light will shine even brighter when the world discovers Sweden’s potential for cultivating and producing high-class wine of the future, says Mikael Mölstad, initiator of The Swedish Wine Tasting.

- We see a potential for Swedish food exports, new job opportunities and a new basic industry for Sweden in harmony with local craftsmanship, know-how and quality, says Maria Kärnerud, program manager for Try Swedish, Business Sweden's food export program.

- We think this is a perfect investment that we are convinced will lead to a boost in the hospitality industry in terms of food tourism and drinking experiences at vineyards, says Anna Ek-Gustavsson, head of Gastronomy Tourism at Visit Skåne.
